August Summer Learning

Saturday August 1

After staying up late chatting with a wonderful college friend, Ben we were slow moving. We headed out to show off some of our favorite Grand Rapids places. We started with lunch at the Score. Then we went to the Gardens. The kids brought their sketch pads and enjoyed the sculpture park and Japanese Garden. After dinner Ben left and we watched a Jane Goodall documentary.

Sunday August 2

My parents and my niece and nephew came to stay with us for a few days. The kids enjoyed swimming and playing in the yard.

Monday August 3

We spent the day at the beach today. It was a great day of it. We tried out South Haven's South beach today. I had been wanting to take the kids to the splash pad there.

Tuesday August 4

In the morning we went to the Zoo. The kids all had a lot of fun. Then Maddy went home with my parents to spend a week with them. In the evening we finally found some monarch caterpillars. The boys were so excited. We had been looking for them for some time.

Wednesday August 5

Today we took some of the caterpillars we collected to the Douglass family and the Thelen family. It was good to see friends today. Our kids have really enjoyed learning about Jane Goodall this summer. We checked some books out from the library on her and the kids are enjoying learning more about her life's work. Westin helped me make chex mix for our beach trip tommorow and Caiden enjoyed playing with some new clay I picked up from the Dollar Store.

Thursday August 6

It was a beautiful day and we met Mia and the boys at Holland State park for some beach time. We had dinner and then Melissa texted us and wondered if we could meet them at the park for some hiking and fort building. On our way towards the car we saw some deer. While we were at the park our first chrysalis formed today. Mike made a time lapse video of it.

We were excited to see our first caterpillar in the J shape.

Friday August 7

We did a lot of reading today on caterpillars with our books from the library. We continue to enjoy watching them grow. The boys also built castles today out of the boxes that I got for them at Walmart. I worked on some back to school prep and completely planned out our first day of school. We also went to Oriel Park to map out how long the track was. After dinner the Douglass family had us over for a swim and little birthday party for me.
