week 14
Monday - Mike had today off so we didn't do school. Maddy had gymnastics and the kids went to Spring Arbor with Mike to get his potter out of the gas fires kiln.
Tuesday - We continued to work on the long I french fry activity as it has been really great for Maddy with her continued work on sounding out words. This activity also helps Caiden as his focus is learning to spell with the rules. We worked on letter writing and addressing envelopes. Caiden started reading his first chapter book today. This is defiantly stretching him. We watched a Bill Nye the Science guy movie on nutrition to kick off our unit study on food. Maddy picked this one. We randomly started playing this game over break where we roll dice and add them up and see how many sums we can get in a minute. This was really good for Maddy as she needs work on basic addition facts. We plan to do this every day with her.
Wednesday- The kids started swimming back up today and Awana. We started our food rot experiment. We took pictures and recorded our observations on what happened to the food. We are going to Philadelphia in the spring and plan on visiting 4 national parks that the kids can earn Jr. Ranger badges at. I printed off the books and we started working on them. The kids also went out and played in the snow.
Thursday- We continued our work with long I but put the french fries away as the kids were over this activity. I brought out the pizza activity to work with. We continued our food rot experiment and recorded our observations. We talked about how the food shriveled because all food has water in it and the water evaporated. I took Maddy to the Art museum to see the Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion fashion exhibit. She loved it. The artist uses 3D printing to design her line. She also played in the art room to make her own fashion designs as well as some of the other art actives. After we went ice skating.
Friday- We talked about Paul Revere's occupation of Tinsmith and made our own tin design. Westin and Maddy played with playdough. We recorded our observations on the food experiment, watched a Bill Nye video and began The Fighting Ground book. In the afternoon we met friends at the Children's museum and then went rock climbing.
