week 6
Sunday
We played hooky today and skipped church. It was just the most perfect fall day and we are feeling the wight of the Fall busy schedule. We needed a little mini getaway. We hiked about 3 1/2 miles at our favorite hiking spot. Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge is by far the best place to hike in West Michigan. We all had a great time.
After we got home the kids went to Awana and we got stuff done around the house. When Awana was finished we went out for ice cream with friends. It was the final day of the season and time to offically say goodbye to summer.*
This week Westin is learning about the letter F which is so perfect because we have a fire station tour today! We're going with our old Rez Life group. We've also been talking about how this is fall and we pick apples in the fall. To help reinforce that concept we made apple sauce today. We also talked about Johnny Appleseed and read the book Seed to Seed which tells the story of the real man. Westin continues to work on pre writing exercises everyday to help with pencil grip. Westin also cut the lemon grass he planted at Koistiers last week. We talked about how the grass comes from the seeds and we can see the roots now too. Preschool is so fun!
The big kids finished their unit on the Spanish American War which was a lot of fun. We we ended it with Teddy Roosevelt and the rough riders taking San Juan hill. This was a good transition into the next unit on the Progressive Era and Teddy Roosevelt's presidency. They are making good progress in their spelling book and Maddy is working on temperature this week in Math and we will be tracking the weather. She counties to work on time and addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts too. Caiden is writing a news report this week and Maddy is working on pronouns and plural nouns. I am pleased with everyones progress in the different areas they are studying.
After we finished school at home we went to the fire station for our field trip. Then we had about an hour before Maddy's sewing class. So we went to the library and played. While Maddy had sewing lessons I took the boys to get groceries. Then we came home had dinner and worked on Awana verses.

The kids had Spanish today but Maddy wanted to work on her coloring book before class. While the kids were at Spanish I did some prep for the kids night at Grace. After Spanish we went roller skating with friends. Caiden won the race for his age group. He was very proud of himself. Caiden had also finished the second book in the Percy Jackson series so we watched the movie in the afternoon. We had dinner then Maddy and I went to the American Girl Doll Party at the homeschool building. We had a great time and enjoyed learning about Kanani. She was from Hawaii during world war 2 and she trained her dog to entertain the troops. So they brought in a paws for a cause dog and Maddy enjoyed seeing the dog do her train tasks that would help a disabled person be more functional.
