week 12

Monday- So I would call today a dry run.  We didn't do any curriculum today except history because the kids wanted too.  But we had a to do list and we tackled a verity of activities today.  The kids made edible maps of the Crusader States, we made a snow storm in a jar, we read joke books and did mad libs.  I read to Westin and Westin read to me.  The big kids read on their own. We played Clue, and played with legos and dolls. The kids had outside play time and then Caiden helped me prepare our battle of the books packets.  The kids got screen time in the afternoon while I went for a run (new year's resolution time) and then I went to the library followed by dinner prep and getting things ready for School on Tuesday.  After dinner we played Mr. X and then I had a battle of the books coaches meeting.  I was glad we didn't do actual curriculum today.  It was enough to get back to the todo list.  The kids were wonderful today.  We have a lot planned for tomorrow too.  Welcome back to the speed of real life.  We will miss you winter break.

Tuesday- Today was our first day back at it for real.  We made snowball slime to start our day.  The kids loved it. Then we made constellation cookies for science.  We made a vase to help learn about Elanor of Aquitaine.  She gave a vase to King Louis of France before they got married. We learned about Jackson Pollock in Art and used his splatter technique.  We did lots of other subjects too but as always these were the highlights.  The kids did great and had wonderful attitudes.  Then we went to the movies to see Croods 2 with some friends.

Wednesday- I thought it would be fun to build constillations out of toothpicks and marshmellows but the kids just wanted to build with them which I was fine with.  Our just for fun project for today was a glowing bouncy egg project.  You break open highlighters and pour them into vinager and then the nect day it turns into a really fun project. The kids finished up school by lunch time and then they attended their new PBL with Hamilton.  They will be taking outdoor education classes at the Holland Nature Center once a week.  I really need this for me.  Sending them all out of the house for a few hours a week is really good for me. They all really enjoyed it.  We also listened to Caiden's book Origami Yoda on the way there.  All the kids enjoyed it.  In the evening we made our own Origami Yodas.  After that we tried to watch the Lion of Winter but it was really really horrible.  The kids made it an hour in which I consider a victory.

Thursday - Our just for fun project was elephant toothpaste.  The kids really enjoyed it and I let them play with different combinations of ingredients.  We've all been enjoying our just for fun projects this week.  It's defiantly making our first week back to school more fun.  Next, the kids made constellations in a jar.  It was a lot of fun.  We have been talking about the Spanich Moors in history this week. Islamic art is just beautiful so we worked on our own repeating geometric shapes today. Our eggs soaking in vinegar over night so today we enjoyed seeing how high we could bounce them and how cool they looked under a black light. They REALLY enjoyed this project.   Westin also had swim lessons today too.

Friday - Our just for fun project was magic milk today. This is always such a fun experiment. Caiden had his 3rd Battle of the books meeting today.  The boys are doing great!  Maddy also had riding lessons today.  The kids did a full days worth of work and our first week back to school after a long Christmas break was a success.  We all had fun and enjoyed each other and there was no complaining.
